FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza says he is targeting to reach the group stages of the 2018 Total Caf Champions League.
The former Warriors captain wrote himself into the country`s football history when he guided the Zvishavane side to the league title last season.
The Platinum miners take on Deportivo de Agosto of Angola in the preliminary round with the first leg set for Estadio 11 de Novembro on the weekend of February 9 – 11.
The reverse fixture is set for Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane the following weekend.
Speaking at a press conference in Bulawayo on Thursday, Mapeza said they have done their homework on their opponents.
“They are a very strong team which is backed by the Angolan army. They have participated in the Champions League before although they have not done very well.
“However, I know the challenges that we are going to face when we go to Angola,’ said Mapeza.
While the platinum miners have had a poor run in their previous African safari excursion, their opponents have done much better.
FC Platinum did not make it to the group stages of the Champions League in their maiden appearance in 2012 after falling to Al-Merreikh of Sudan.
In 2015, they played in the second tier Caf Confederation Cup tournament, where they were mauled 5 – 1 on aggregate by Young Africans of Tanzania in the first round.
On the other hand, the Angolan Champions reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2009.
“The main objective is for us to reach the group stages. When we get there we will then plan our way forward,” said Mapeza.
On chances of making history by winning the continental cup, Mapeza boldly declared, “It can be done!”Advertisement
