ZIMBABWE champions FC Platinum have left for Angola for their Caf African Champions League away to Despotivo de Agosto of Angola on Sunday with coach Norman Mapeza insisting they will be cautious in their approach.
FC Platinum have failed to go beyond the first round on the two occasions they have participated in the prestigious tournament.
However, with local rivals Caps United having reached the group stage last term, FC Platinum are under pressure to emulate or surpass that achievement.
Mapeza however, said their performance should not be measured against that of Caps United.
“Our target is not about surpassing what Caps United did,” he said before leaving for Angola on Thursday.
“We set ourselves a target of reaching the group stage and we believe we have done enough to achieve that target. I have watched our opponents play; they are a very good side and we will approach the match with caution.
“We can then adjust as the game progresses.”
The Zvishavane side played some friendly matches against Zambian sides Zanaco, Nkana Red Devils and Ferroviario of Mozambique as dress rehearsal for the Angola match.
Mapeza’s men edged Ferroviario 1-0 but were overwhelmed 4-0 by Zanaco while the last match against Nkana Red Devils ended in a goalless draw.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football have assigned Zambian referee, Audrick Nkole, to take charge of the match in Luanda. He will be assisted by compatriots, first assistant Oliver Gift Mweene, second assistant Romeo Kasengel, fourth official Kasokota
Kafuli Derrick and Mangaliso Jabulani Langwenya of Swaziland is the match commissioner.
This is the second time FC Platinum will be participating in the prestigious tournament in which they failed to make an impact bowing out in the first round.
In contrast, the Angolan champions are seasoned campaigners in African football, having made eight appearances in the prestigious tournament, reaching the quarter-finals of the lucrative tournament in 2009.
Should FC Platinum overcome Despotivo de Agosto, they will face the winner between South African side, Bidvest Wits and Pamplemousse of Mauritius in the first round.Advertisement
