GEORGE Nyirenda once again stole the spotlight when he scored an own goal for the second consecutive week as Caps United fell 1-0 to FC Platinum in a Chibuku Super Cup quarterfinal match at Mandava Stadium on Saturday.
The defender separated the two sides early in the match when he beat his goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube to grab another own goal as he had done the previous weekend against the same side in the 6-0 ZNA Charity Shield final defeat.
With just 13 minutes played, the Malawian international mistakenly connected an Obrey Chirwa cross which he attempted to clear and helped the platinum miners booked a semi-final berth.
Caps arrived at Mandava Stadium seeking to banish the humiliation of that 6-0 thumping but were at the receiving end again.
Having grabbed a hat-trick in that heavy win, Chirwa was again at hand to brutalise the visitors and his pressure gifted FC Platinum a goal off Nyirenda.
The platinum miners could have doubled their lead on 20 minutes but Tarisai Rukanda had his shot crush against the woodwork as Chirwa also forced Dube to perform a wonderful save.
Caps tied to comeback but Gerald Phiri’s shot was blocked at the goal line by Raphael Muduviwa as the Harare giants went on top of proceedings.
But FC Platinum clung on for a slim victory.
