Masvingo: Businesses here have mobilised $12 million towards the province’s efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus.
The funds are being administered by the COVID-19 provincial taskforce.
Rodgers Irimayi, provincial information officer told NewZimbabwe.com that, Tongaat Hullets donated $12 million towards the cause while other companies such as Byword Motors channelled $100 000, with Bikita Minerals donating $50 000.
“Part of the money which came from Byword has already been used to purchase connectors for the ventilators at the Rujeko isolation centre.
“The Taskforce will prioritise requirements needed.
“There are several equipment and personal protective clothing that health personnel require while the eight isolation centres established in the province are being improved to standard levels. So, more resources are still needed,” Irimayi said.
Masvingo is yet to confirm a positive case of Covid-19 with the entire country recording 9 cases and one death to date.
Officials from the taskforce which is headed by Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Ezra Chadzamira are currently moving around educating people to adhere to the recommended World Health Organisation standards in stopping the spread of the virus, while providing sanitisers to the less privileged members of the community.
Part of the money is also expected to capacitate each district in Masvingo to conduct its own tests and isolation centres as part of decentralisation efforts in the fight against the spread of COVID 19.
