MASVINGO: Some residents here say they are in the dark concerning the coronavirus as the government is not disseminating any information on the spread of the deadly disease.
As a result, a grouping of locally based nurse aides is conducting awareness campaigns in the town, visiting residents, orphanages and old people’s homes.
“Many people are relying on information which is shared via social media platforms and it’s now a burden to the elderly and orphans in the communities who do not have access to social media,” the group’s leader Portia Munengiwa said.
She said they were a group of 30 nurse aides who were using their personal resources to conduct door to door awareness campaigns.
“We want to work with all the responsible departments in this country to fight the spread of this deadly coronavirus because we haven’t seen much on the part of government in making awareness readily available to ordinary people on how they can prevent the spread of the virus.
“We are calling on the government and other well-wishers to extend a helping hand to the less privileged members of our society as most cannot afford to buy the essentials needed to fight the spread of this disease,” said Munengiwa.
Zimbabwe recorded its first coronavirus death on Monday while it has two other confirmed cases.
