MARONDERA: A newly elected MDC Alliance councillor in Marondera Central was this week fined for forging Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) nomination papers in June.
Ward 10 councillor, Jimmy Jalifu, pleaded not guilty but was convicted at the Marondera Magistrates’ Courts for using fraudulent nomination papers.
He was ordered to pay a fine of $350.
Last month, the MDC Alliance reported Jalifu to ZEC for forging his nomination papers before the elections management body reported him to the police leading to his arrest.
He was announced the winner of Ward 10 last week despite being expelled from the alliance for contesting against party choice Arthur Masiyiwa.
The MDC Alliance won 11 of the 12 contested local council seats in the town. The other seat went to a Zanu PF candidate.
Jalifu said he would appeal the sentence at the High Court.
