MDC Alliance chief elections officer Morgen Komichi was Saturday freed on $200 bail by Harare magistrate Francis Mapfumo after spending two nights in police cells.

Komichi is answering to a charge of contravening the Electoral Act after he allegedly gate-crashed a Zimbabwe Electoral Commission press conference to discredit the presidential election results which were being announced by the poll management authority.

In granting him bail, court also ordered the former Transport deputy minister to report twice a week at Harare Central police, not to interfere with witnesses and to continue residing at his given address as part of his bail conditions.

Komichi is expected to be back in court next week after his lawyers indicated that they intended to challenge the constitutionality of his arrest.

His lawyer, Obey Shava, a human rights attorney, put the state on notice that they will challenge his placement on remand this Tuesday.

According to the state, Komichi interrupted the electoral process after he said that he told local and international media who were gathered for the high profile ZEC event that he had not appended his own signature, on behalf of the main opposition alliance, to presidential election results.

Komichi claimed the results were fake adding that they were not verified by election agents as should be done.

He also said the fact that the results were constituency based showed that set processes were not followed.

The main opposition top official was in company of MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda when he allegedly committed the offence on August 2 this year.
