MIDLANDS: A Shurugwi gold producer was violently killed by a group of artisanal miners who wanted to gain access to his mineral-rich mine.
A local court heard that the deceased, Tatenda Moyo, owned Hidden Treasure Mine, which had lucrative deposits of the yellow metal.
Bhewu Banga, 27, was recently charged with Moyo’s murder when he appeared before Shurugwi resident magistrate, Tavengwa Sangster.
State prosecutor Bertha Bore told the court that on September 4, 2018, Banga teamed up with four accomplices and proceeded to Moyo’s mine with the intention to prospect for gold.
The group, which was armed with various weapons including spears, accosted Moyo and tried to forcibly enter the mine shaft.
Moyo tried to resist but was overpowered and then stabbed all over the body, leading his death.
Banga was later arrested while his accomplices are still at large.
