Highlanders 1-2 Caps United
CAPS United set up another final against bitter rivals Dynamos when they edged Highlanders in the Bob91 play off at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
Dynamos got a bye to the Bob91 final as the defending champions.
Rodreck Mutuma opened the scoring on the stroke of halftime before Takudzwa Mahori blasted a grounder past Highlanders goalkeeper Arial Sibanda 10 minutes into the second half.
Then, in a typical schoolboy manner, Caps United goalkeeper Victor Twaliki gifted Obadiah Tarumbwa with the Highlanders goal when he mis-kicked a goal kick, moments after some delaying tactics.
Twaliki seemed to have been struck by a bottle from incensed Highlanders fans over his time-wasting tactics before the fateful goal kick.
Caps fans then retaliated and pelted Sibanda with missiles at the other end, causing a three minute stoppage to the match.
Mark Harrison, the Caps United coach was impressed with his charges.
“When we made a chance after 30 minutes, Highlanders were in control, but from them on we took charge and controlled the proceedings. We played well and I am looking forward to the final against Dynamos.
“This is pre-season so we are using these games to judge how far we have gone so far,” he said after the match.
Losing coach Bongani Mafu rued missed chances.
“We created chances, but we did not take them, we need to be brave enough and try shorts from afar and from near and vary our attack. I don’t think we are a lost cause, we are creating chances and today we were punished for not taking them,” Mafu said.
Commenting on Tarumbwa’s goal, Mafu said: “No, the goalkeeper made a stupid mistake and paid the prize. He must not hide behind the fans.”Advertisement
