CHICKEN Inn captain Danny “Deco” Phiri and Highlanders striker Knox Mutizwa are leading the race to win the coveted Castle Lager Footballer of the Year Award.
The two have emerged as the favourite to win the 2015 Soccer Star of the Year award, whose selection will be conducted in Harare on Monday.
A panel of sports journalist, team captains and coaches meet in Harare on Monday to select the eleven outstanding players as well as the best coach and referee of the year.
The 11 finalists will be announced on the day, while the Soccer Star of the Year as well as the first and second runners-up will be announced at a banquet on December 4.
The Rookie and Goalkeeper of the Year will also be selected so will be the Most Disciplined Team.
Mutizwa was the leading goal scorer with 14 goals before the final round of matches on Saturday and could win the Golden Boot Award as well as fight for the overall top gong.
It has been a tough season, where no player has illuminated the domestic football scene.
While his teammates like striker Edmore Chirambadare, ageless midfielder Clemence Matawu and goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze were also influential in the title charge to deserve a place on the 11 finalists list, the team’s success owes much to Phiri.
Initially it was thought Phiri was ineligible because he had accumulated six yellow cards but the organisers have confirmed that the Chicken Inn man had only picked four yellow cards.
This paves the way for him to be crowned the king of domestic football having guided his team to its maiden championship.
Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva and fullback Ocean Mushure could also grace the calender alongside Caps United midfielder Dominic Mukandi and defender Stephen Makatuka.
Triangle’s Lameck Nhamo is one player who has been outstanding for the Chiredzi outfit and could find himself on the calendar.
