AN ex-convict from Bulilima in Matabeleland South province, released from prison two weeks ago, has been arrested on allegations of murdering his maternal grandmother using a spade.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa two weeks pardoned over 5 000 prisoners across the country.

Matabeleland South provincial spokesperson, Philisani Ndebele confirmed the arrested of Mpilwenhle Mabhena, 25 of Matjinge Village in Bulilima district.

He was released from prison on March 13 and allegedly killed his granny Sibikwaphi Ncube, 75, by striking her with a spade on the head while she was asleep in the kitchen with other grandchildren.

“He took a spade and struck his grandmother on the head and her grandchildren were woken up by the old woman’s scream for help,” said Ndebele.

He fled from the scene but Ncube died on the spot as a result of the attack. The matter was reported to the police leading to Mabhena’s arrest.

Mabhena was accusing his grandmother of reporting him to the police, leading to his arrest and conviction.
