AS the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title race heads for a photo finish, Highlanders coach Erol Akbay says any team that makes a mistake in the remaining four games of the campaign will effectively be thrown out of the race.
Caps United lead the table with 52 points, one point ahead of second placed FC Platinum while Highlanders are third with 50 points.
Only four matches are left before the end of the season, and the Dutch coach says the championship remains a three-horse race but believes there is no longer room slip-ups.
“It’s a tight race- a three horse race. Everyone wants to win all their remaining four matches. Any team that makes a mistake will be out of the race. You can’t afford to make a mistake,” said Akbay.
The Dutchman said if Caps United stumble in one of their upcoming matches, Highlanders’ game against FC Platinum could decide the championship.
“I think our match against FC Platinum could decide the championship depending on what Caps United will be doing.
“If they stumble, it could be a title decider, I think. But if they are winning, it can’t be a decider. Everyone has a chance and we will try not to avoid any mistake,” said Akbay.
Enjoying impressive form, Highlander have won six of their previous league encounters on the bounce, including the Saturday 1-0 victory Chapungu that saw them taking their points tally to 50 just one behind second placed FC Platinum who were edged 2-1 by Harare City
But they still have to clear hurdles against Bulawayo City, Tsholotsho, FC Platinum and Hwange.
FC Platinum must play Ngezi Platinum at Mandava Stadium before making the trip to Ascot for a date with Chapungu. They will then host Highlanders before rounding off the campaign with an away tie to Tsholotsho.
For their part, Caps United host bitter rivals Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday in a match they must win to give themselves the much-needed psychological boost going into the final four matches of the season.
The Harare giants will then face off Harare City, Ngezi Platinum before finishing off the season with a clash against Chapungu.
