Notorious Hwange burglar sold out by hooker

Hwange: A local man suspected to have broken into several homes to steal various property allegedly used his loot to pay for sex from a commercial sex worker who later sold him out when she was found with some of the stolen goods, a court has heard.

Hwange magistrate Portia Mhlanga heard during the week that Xolani Dube (34) was arrested Friday last week when police raided some shacks used as a brothel at Hwange truck stop.

In the course of the raid, police recovered an assortment of groceries and other goods in the woman’s shack.

Upon questioning, the woman from Lupane told police that Dube gave her the property as payment for sex.

“I got the goods from a man as payment for sexual services as he usually comes to me for sex,” said the woman whose identify has been withheld.

Dube was not asked to plead to a combined 24 counts of unlawful entry and theft.

He was remanded in custody to Friday next week.

Appearing for the state, James Makaza told court how the woman led police to Dube following a raid at her shack.

“On October 10, police received information that there were some prostitutes staying in some shacks at the truck stop. Police proceeded to the area to investigate recovered various kinds of goods including a DVD player,” said the prosecutor.

Upon being questioned, the woman told the police that she got the goods from Dube as payment for sexual services.

She was taken to the police station together with the goods and the DVD which matched the one that was stolen from a tuck-shop in Lwendulu on 29 September this year.

The woman led police to Dube who confessed to breaking into a number of premises in Hwange, leading to his arrest.

Allegations are that Dube stole property worth $4 361.

These include 15 smartphones, 15x50kg bags of fertilizer, amplifiers, various grocery items and bottles of clear beer.
