Rape accused Masvingo teacher commits suicide

MASVINGO: A school teacher based at Mataruse Secondary School in Gutu recently committed suicide over allegations he raped a Form Two pupil he taught surfaced.

Jacob Murambinda 42 from Mashizha village under chief Munikwa in Gutu he hanged himself near the school cottages.

Acting Masvingo provincial ZRP spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and said cases of suicide are now on the increase.

“The case of suicide by hanging was reported at Bhasera Police Station where a man who is employed by the ministry of education as a teacher died after hanging himself,” Asst. Inspector Dhewa said

He said Murambinda left his homestead for work on the morning of March 12 and did not return home after he had made a call to his wife Veronica Godhini informing her that he was facing allegations of rape.

Concerned by her husband’s call and his failure to return from work as usual, the wife made a follow up at the school where she heard that her husband was not available, and she continued with her search.

The body of the lifeless Murambinda was later discovered around 8pm hanging on a tree some 400 meters from the school cottages

Asst. Inspector Dhewa urged people not to resort to death when faced with challenges but rather seek counselling from community elders, church leaders and the police.
