ROMANIAN football giants Steaua Bucuresti, have reportedly joined the race to sign Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat when his contract with South African club Mamelodi Sundowns expires at the end of this month.
The 27 year-old attacking midfielder is a subject of interest both on the continent and internationally although he has insisted that he is yet to make a decision on his future.
Now reports in Romania indicate that one of that country’s biggest clubs, record 29-time champions Steaua Bucuresti, have signaled their intention to land his signature.
According to Digi Sport, Steaua Bucuresti coach Nicolae Dica has asked to bring a top attacking midfielder to create a competition for Harlem Gnohere, and the Romanian giants are targeting Billiat for that role.
It is reported however that Billiat’s salary demands, though, could hamper the deal.
Billiat wants a salary of at least €33 000 [about R524 188] a month, but Bucuresti may not be able to meet his demands because they are over what they pay their players.
Bucuresti, however, have competition from Egyptian side Zamalek, who appear to have reignited their interest in the PSL 2015/16 Footballer of the Season.
Bucuresti becomes the latest club to be linked with after Zamalek (Egypt), Qarabag (Azerbaijan), Djurgardens (Sweden) while in South Africa, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits are also thought to be after the Zimbabwean’s signature.
The player’s current employers Mamelodi Sundowns are also reportedly yet to throw in the towel and have been continuing their efforts to convince him to stay on at Chloorkop.
Billiat played in the Cosafa Cup recently and helped the Warriors to victory in Polokwane, Limpopo.
Speaking on his future during the tournament Billiat said: “I have to go back to my manager and see what he has for me before I make the right decision for my family and everyone who supports me.”
