POLICE have arrested the fugitive driver of a Smart Express bus blamed for causing Wednesday’s horrific Rusape road accident which killed 46 people, some of whom have since been named.
There were claims the driver fled the scene apparently in panic and went into hiding.
In a statement Friday, police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the driver, Cosmas Marembo and his conductor were now in custody and assisting police with investigations.
Police initially announced 47 people had lost their lives on the spot before revising the figure to 46 on Thursday.
However, subsequent reports put the death toll at 50 after three more people were said to have succumbed to the accident injuries while in hospital but Charamba insisted nothing had changed yet.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to put it on record that the death toll from the horrific road traffic accident which occurred on 7 November 2018 at the 160km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway still remains at 46.
“We have not received any other deaths from this accident as reported by other sources.
“Of the passengers who were injured in the accident, 52 were initially admitted at Rusape General Hospital. (Of these), 33 were treated and discharged, 14 were transferred to Parirenyatwa hospital, Harare (and) are in a critical condition. One passenger is still admitted at Mutare Provincial Hospital,” the statement said.
Charamba however did not say whether Marembo and his conductor, who remained unnamed, had handed themselves over or had been arrested in their bid to flee.
“In another development, the driver and the conductor who were said to have fled the scene, were located and are now assisting police with investigations,” she said.
