LUPANE: A traditional healer from Lupane has been arrested after he allegedly raped two teenage girls in separate incidents, claiming to be protecting them from attack by goblins.
Locals also told police investigators several other victims had also been raped by Thomas Sithole, aged 46, but could not the abuse report because of fear.
The suspect was not formally charged when he appeared before Lupane magistrate Ndumo Masuku this week. He was remanded out of custody on $100 bail to next week Friday.
One of the victims is aged 16 while the age of the other was not given.
It is alleged that Sithole drugged the complainants with a traditional concoction before raping them sometime last year.
Prosecutors allege that Sithole allegedly hoodwinked the first complainant.
“The accused person went to the complainant’s family and claimed that he wanted to employ her,” said State lawyer Sanders Sibanda.
“He (Sithole) then took her to Bulawayo and bought her clothes after which he drove back to his homestead in Lupane where he raped.”
It is the state’s contention that while at his homestead, Sithole raped the girl once after whipping her with a sjambok for refusing to sleep with him.
He allegedly raped her again at night. The girl later reported him to the police.
On the second count, Sithole allegedly told the complainant that she was in danger of being attacked by some goblins and gave her some muti to bath her privates.
He then gave girl some concoction to drink resulting in her getting dizzy upon which he allegedly raped her.
The girl noticed some bloodstains and semen on her privates when she regained consciousness.
She reported a case of rape to the police resulting in investigations that led to Sithole’s arrest last month.
