THE Warriors have withdrawn their participation in the West African Football Union (Wafu) Nations Cup citing financial difficulties.
Zimbabwe had been invited as guest participants at the eight-nation tournament to be staged in Ghana next month.
After they had initially confirmed their availability, Zifa has however since notified Wafu of their incapacity to take part in the tournament and have been replaced by Sierra Leone.
Coach Ian Gorowa intended to use Wafu which is limited to local-based players to prepare for next January’s Chan tournament
“It is not a secret that we are struggling financially,” said Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela.
“We really wanted to participate in this tournament, but our monies did not allow us. We fully understand this would have been a perfect opportunity to gear up for the Chan tournament.
“We are now concentrating on raising funds for a training camp in South Africa before the Chan tournament kicks off. This would be good preparations.”
Zimbabwe are in Group B together with Morocco, Burkina Faso and Uganda and would be based in Cape Town.
The Warriors recently missed another opportunity to pay Egypt in an international friendly due to the short notice in which the seven-time African champions had requested the match.Advertisement
