NEWLY crowned Soccer Star of the Year Tawanda Muparati is surprised that he landed the ultimate individual honour in Zimbabwean football.
The Dynamos vice-captain was named the 2013 best footballer of the year at a glittering banquet on Friday evening as he elbowed Silas Songani of Harare City and Chicken Inn’s Kuda Mahachi.
The league’s top goal scorer Tendai Ndoro as well as Caps United utility Hardlife Zvirekwi were amongst the 11 players from whom Muparati emerged the king.
“We all had equal chances of winning this award because we performed very well during the season. If you look at Silas you see a player worth this accolade. Even Kuda did well to deserve this,” Muparati said.
“I never knew that I was going to be the soccer star so I was surprised when my name was called. Even though I think the other guys deserved, I think I also played my part in ensuring this.
“We had a difficult season with Dynamos and we won the league title on the last day of the season. I played my role in ensuring this. Am proud the season had to end this way.”
It was Muparati’s third straight league title with Dynamos who are now gearing up for the 2014 Caf Champions League.
The season saw the midfielder breaking into the team for the first time ever and is expected to be part of Ian Gorowa’s squad for the Chan tournament.Advertisement
