Speeding cyclist kills pedestrian, convicted on own plea

A 23 year old Domboshawa man, was on Tuesday hauled before the courts after he hit and killed a pedestrian with his bicycle

Sydney Matope, of Matope village was appeared before Harare magistrate Richard Ramaboa facing culpable homicide charges.

He pleaded guilty to riding with negligence and will be sentenced on Friday.

The State is the complainant in the case in which Bothwell Kamuzinga (38) lost his life.

According to Prosecutor, Isheunesu Mhiti the incident occurred on April 22 around 6pm.

Matope was riding his bicycle along Harare Makumbe Road.

The Court heard that when Matope reached the 34 km peg, he failed to keep a proper look out and hit the now deceased with his bicycle.

Mhiti said other specifics of Matope’s negligence included speeding when circumstances did not permit considering it was getting dark.

He accused Matope of failing to stop upon realising that an accident was imminent.

Kamuzinga was rushed to Chinamhora clinic before he was later transferred to Makumbe Hospital.

He however passed on before he was admitted.

Postmortem conducted concluded that he succumbed to the accident injuries.
