THE offspring of the legends Oliver Mtukudzi and Zex Manatsa have touched down in the UK Wednesday as artists begin to arrive for next week’s Southern African Music and Arts Festival (SAMA Festival).
Selmor Mtukudzi, husband Tendai Manatsa and Sandra Mtukudzi were the first group to arrive Wednesday for the two-concert festival due on the 25th March in London at Oasis Barking and the next day at Athena Arena in Leicester.
Expected to arrive next week are Jah Prayzah, Winky D and Tocky Vibes. Organisers say the two concerts are likely to go down in history as one of the best ever Zimbabwean shows in UK.
All the artists on the bill are award winners and have been having record numbers of attendance never seen before in Zimbabwe. On New Year 2016 Jah Prayzah and Winky D filled up the Sheraton Hotel arena to capacity.
For her part, Selmor made headlines for publicly denouncing her father for lack of support in 2014, but it is evident they since made up. She has also matured and concentrated on her music, becoming an independent artist.
Selmor has been in the limelight this year for the right reasons; she has been riding high with her album Expressions, whose single Nguva Yangu – a high tempo and groovy song – has been a hit on radio stations in Zimbabwe.
She also won the NAMA award for best female artist and also scooped the Hottest Female Single award for the same hit song at the inaugural African Entertainment Awards held in New Jersey, USA, shrugging off stiff competition from several other musicians such as Zahara and Tinashe Kachingwe.
Selmor is more of an Afro Jazz musician following the footsteps of her legendary father Oliver Mtukudzi.
Y2K Directors Fredrick Matenga and Alexander Marapara said there has been a high demand for advance tickets, forcing them to print more.
“We are overwhelmed by the response; this gig is definitely going down in memory lane. It is advisable to buy tickets to avoid disappointment and paying more at the door,” the promoters said in a statement.
