Trey Nyoni set for new Liverpool contract after Forest £30 million bid rejected

Liverpool are expected to open talks over a new contract for midfielder Trey Nyoni, who was subject of a surprise £30 million bid from Nottingham Forest.

Nyoni is set for an important role in Andoni Iraola‘s squad this season, with the 19-year-old stepping up following Curtis Jones‘ move to Inter Milan.

That was shown as Liverpool immediately rejected an offer from Forest on Monday, worth an initial £25 million with £5 million in add-ons.

It was a bid which appeared to come out of the blue and followed an enquiry from the Midlands club into Giorgi Mamardashvili‘s availability.

While Mamardashvili’s future is still open, Liverpool will look to tie Nyoni down to a new long-term contract to reflect his move up the ranks.

The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans reports that “talks over another extension are expected to follow” despite the teenager only signing his last deal just over a year ago.

That contract, announced on Nyoni’s 18th birthday, came when he had still only played six times for the first team, and he went on to make 14 more appearances under Arne Slot last season.

While his situation may have been different had Slot stayed this summer, with suggestions of a loan move to Swansea, he has been promoted further by Iraola.

Speaking ahead of the first game of the season, the new head coach said: “I’m very happy with Trey. Very, very happy.

“He has been very good in pre-season. Not only in the games, even when he trains with us he’s facing top-level players and he’s at the level.

“So I have no doubts with Trey, he will be very valuable this season for us, hopefully plays a lot and gives the level that I’m seeing every day in training.”

Nyoni’s current deal is understood to run to 2030, and though there will be a reluctance to pay over the odds for a youngster with 487 minutes of senior experience, he is now considered a genuine first-team option.
