MUSIC icon, Oliver Mtukudzi, has been lined up to give an inaugural Hugh Masekela Lecture at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) South Africa next month.
During his visit to Zimbabwe earlier in August, Masekela announced that he had invited his Tuku to deliver the first of a series of annual lectures that would, among other things, focus on African heritage as well as cultural and academic issues.
In a statement Thursday Mtukudzi’s promoters, Exit Digital PR, said the lecture, which is expected to be attended by over 2,000 people including SA government officials, had been set for September 9.
“The Hugh Masekela Lecture and Colloquia will be complemented by the Hugh Masekela Music Dialogue/Master Class Workshops earlier on the same day and the Masekela and Mtukudzi Boutique Concert at the Soweto Theatre on Wednesday, 10 September,” said Exit Digital PR.
“Respondents and discussants will include artist, activist and former first female SRC President at Fort Hare University, Nomsa Mazwai, along with author and UJ Chancellor, Prof. Njabulo Ndebele.”
Tuku and Masekela first met in 1982 in Bulawayo and their friendship has developed steadily over the years.
During Hugh’s recent visit to Zimbabwe, they both spoke about their mutual respect for each other’s work.
They also stepped into the studio for the first time together on August 7, a long held wish for the two musical giants who have shared the stage numerous times at various concerts all over the world.Advertisement
