SOME 30 unidentified youths shut down First Street between Nelson Mandela and Jason Moyo Avenue beating up passersby and throwing bricks at motorists.
The youths, who were not in any party regalia to associate their acts with any organisation, shouted obscenities even at the elderly. They were also ordering everyone out of town.
“We do not know who they are or why they are beating people, this country is now something else I tell you.
“They are beating up people and smashing cars with bricks; who does that!” asked one passerby who survived an attack at corner First Street and Jason Moyo.
The police base along First Street was seen abandoned while no police officers were in sight at the time.
Teargas could be smelt right up to Leopold Takawira where vendors were as confused as anyone else who witnessed the skirmishes.
