AN Epworth woman strangled her newly-born baby girl in a toilet just after giving birth supposedly to save her marriage, a Harare court heard Monday.
Grace Mukwena, 23, appeared before magistrate Tilda Mazhande charged with infanticide.
She was released on $50 bail with the case remanded to next week for trial.
Court heard she has been married for about four months.
However, before the marriage she was already pregnant by another man identified as Taurai Chidza of Mutare.
The pregnancy was allegedly five months old when she got married to one Proud Tole.
Mukwena had not disclose the pregnancy to Tole.
Prosecutors said her husband caught her strangling the baby and summoned some elderly women who tried to save the child before handing the mother to the police.
According to court papers, Mukwena stayed with Tole for four months until she went into labour on April 27 this year.
She reportedly left her husband sleeping around midnight claiming she wanted to relieve herself.
Court heard she then gave birth to a baby girl while in the toilet and strangled her to death using her bare hands.
Tole realised his wife was taking too long and followed her to the bathroom.
He then caught her holding the baby who was already motionless, sitting in a pool of blood and summoned neighbours to the scene.
The baby was rushed to Epworth polyclinic where they were advised that she was already dead.
Linda Gadzikwa appeared for the state.
