GWERU-BASED Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) short wave broadcaster, Voice of Zimbabwe radio, has fired all reporters and other supporting staff leaving about five workers to man the company’s equipment, bringing the media station to the brink of collapse.
“We write to advise that the employer has decided to exercise its right in terms of the Common Law and Section 12 (4) of the Labour Act (Chapter 28:01) (Hereinafter referred to as the Labour Act to terminate your contract of employment in notice with immediate effect,” part of the dismissal letters dated 11 August signed by acting chief executive, Patrick Mavhura reads.
“The employer absolves you from any of your contractual duties during the notice period, accordingly you shall receive your notice pay whilst you are at home, subject to any existing commitments by way of debts or obligations.
“Please ensure that you surrender the ZBC identity card, information relating to your responsibilities and any other ZBC property in your possession to the undersigned by 12 August 2015.”
State owned group, Zimpapers recently fired over 100 employees, taking advantage of the recent Supreme Court ruling allowing companies to dismiss workers on three months’ notice in a development that has seen more than 18,000 people lose their jobs.Advertisement
