THE country’s football governing body, Zifa, has hailed the Warriors for a gallant showing that saw them upstage Malawi 2-1 in Saturday’s 2017 Afcon qualifier Group L match away at Kamuzu Stadium.
Zimbabwe got into the match as outside rankers after turmoil hit their camp in the build-up to the game.
Just three training sessions, players’ strike over appearance fees and allowances, as well as arriving in Malawi a few hours before the match were some of the chaotic events that struck the Warriors.
But goals from Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat carried the day for Zimbabwe.
“The Zimbabwe Football Association would like to congratulate the Warriors for raising the Zimbabwean flag high by defeating Malawi in 2017 African Cup of nations qualifier match played at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.
“The Association is proud of Coach Kalisto Pasuwa and the hardworking Warriors who defied all odds and emerged victorious,” a statement on the Zifa official website read.
With financial woes affecting Zimbabwe’s national teams, Zifa quickly sent a begging bowl to raise funds for the Warriors in their next assignments.
“We appeal to various sponsors to partner the Warriors so that they qualify for the 2017 Afcon finals. We need to unite as a nation for the success of our national teams.”
Some sponsors including Mimosa Mining Company, Daisy Lodge, Tanganda Private Limited and Herentals College chipped in to ensure the team travelled to Malawi.
“We appreciate the efforts and generosity of these individuals and organizations,” Zifa’s statement read.
“It is with greatest sincerity and humility that we wish to extend our gratitude to these individuals and organizations for partnering the Association in dire and painful moments.
“These important individuals and organisations gave a splendid service to their country and May God, the Almighty, bless them and their loved ones.”
The home-based group of Warriors would be in action this coming weekend for a Chan qualifier against Comoros Islands at home.Advertisement
