ZIFA wants parliament to enact laws that specifically criminalise match-fixing and illegal betting.
The national association has already started lobbying the newly-established Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture, to push for their agenda to parliament.
Zifa president Cuthbert Dube last week met the ministry officials, and presented the association’s concerns.
“It is important that we have match-fixing curbed by the country’s laws. If the situation continues like that we will never be able to arrest this match-fixing scourge,” Dube said.
“That is why we have engaged the new ministry to help us in that regard. We hope the parliamentarians will take this seriously and help us fight match-fixing. There is need for collective efforts rather than us dealing in this alone.
“The fact that Interpol have worked with us on match-fixing calls for their work to be complimented by a local law.”
Those implicated in the Asia-gate match-fixing scandal escaped the wrath of criminal prosecution due to the unavailability of laws that strictly deals with the selling of matches.
Dube also said they have furnished the new ministry with their financial concerns, especially their staggering US$4 million debt.Advertisement
