Coup threatening Sikhala charged with subversion

MDC vice chairman, Job Sikhala has been arrested and charged with subverting a constitutionally elected government.

Sikhala, who is also party MP for Zengeza West, had been summoned by police over threats to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa during a rally Bikita over the weekend.

According to his lawyers, Sikhala was accompanied by his lawyers Obey Shava, Tendai Biti, Mavhunga and Innocent Gonese.

A Warned and Cautioned statement was recorded from him before he was put into the cells.

According to a statement from MDC the legal team tried in vain to have him released.

“Hon vice Chairman Job Sikhala has been charged with contravening section 22 (2) (a) iii of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act or subverting a constitutionally elected government.

“A warned and cautioned statement has been recorded from him and he will appear in court Wednesday. Our legal affairs department tried to get have him released Tuesday in vain as the arresting officers seemed to be acting on instructions,” said MDC.

MDC distanced itself from Sikhala’s statements saying what the founding MP was only expressing his own opinions.
