FORMER Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa believes the Warriors were handed a fair draw for the 2017 African Cup of Nations finals in Gabon in January.
The Warriors were drawn in Group B, alongside African football giants.
According to the draw conducted in Libreville, Gabon on Wednesday night, the Warriors were placed in Group B which also has former African champions, Algeria, Senegal and Tunisia.
Chidzambwa, the first man to shepherd Zimbabwe to their maiden nations cup finals in Tunisia, believes the draw is fair.
“It appears difficult on paper but it’s a fair draw. There is no small team anymore in modern football. What is critical is to support the coach. He needs the support of everyone.
“I think they have a very good chance of progressing from this group,” said Chidzambwa.
The ZPC Kariba coach is also vice chairman of ZIFA’s High Performance Committee which includes Rahman Gumbo, Innocent Chogugudza, Masimba Chihohwa and Taurai Mangwiro who is the Zifa technical director.
Chidzambwa said the committee would make recommendations to the Zimbabwe Football Association to help the team prepare adequately for the continental soccer show case to be held in Gabon in January.
Of its group opponents, Zimbabwe have a better head-to-head record against Senegal winning four and losing three in their seven meetings.
Against Algeria they met in five matches and won one, drew two and lost two while against Tunisia they met twice with both matches ending in draws.
The Gabon Finals is the third time Zimbabwe will be making their third appearance at the continental soccer showpiece.
They get the campaign underway against Algeria on January 15 at the Stade de Franceville before taking on Senegal at the same venue four days later.
They will conclude the group stages with a match against Tunisia at the Stade L’Ammitse on January 23.
The Warriors will be looking to advance to advance for the first time since 2004 when they made an appearance in Tunisia.
