PLATINUM miner Zimplats has come up with a housing project which will see the company’s employees owning their homes, an official revealed this week.
The project will see Zimplats constructing co-houses with workers expected to make extensions before they assume full ownership.
“As part of its community engagement and development initiative, Zimplats has constructed co-houses for workers with (the employees) expected to develop the properties before assuming full ownership.
“At the moment 890 workers live in the co-houses and we are saying locals where Zimplats is carrying out mining activities should benefit through the scheme,” Zimplats head of corporate affairs Busi Chindove told a two-day mining indaba held in Shurugwi.
Chindove said Zimplats was also empowering small scale miners as it buys silica from such producers.
“We also link the small scale miners with banks so that they can access loans,” she said.
Chindove said the company has so far used $220 m for projects since it started operations in 2001.
The Midlands provincial alternative mining indaba which is organised by the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) ended Thursday.Advertisement
