TALENTED Zimbabwe-born Thando Sikwila, 20, was overjoyed after making it into Queen of Pop Kylie Minogue’s team during blind audition for The Voice show in Australia.
Kylie and Joel Madden turned and pressed their red buttons for the Canberra-based Thando.
“I felt overjoyed. Kylie turning around was awesome,” said Sikwila.
It would have been better, she added, had Will.i.am turned as well.
“I was hoping Will.i.am would turn because I really wanted to get on his team,” she said.
“But Kylie’s a legend. I weighed up what would be better for me and I thought about me professionally and went with her.”
According to the Canberra Times, Sikwila moved to Australia with her parents and three sisters in 2001.
She went to high school and college in Canberra, before moving to Melbourne in 2011 to study for a Bachelor of Music.
After singing with a band around Melbourne, as well as performing solo, Thando decided to audition for The Voice to get her name out to a broader audience.
“There’s only so long an artist can sing in pubs – it’s a good opportunity to get my name out to a different demographic,” she said.
“It’s been really surreal. I’ve got an opportunity to learn more about myself as a performer and I’ve had the support of the coaches – I’ve been able to learn something from all of them.”
Now she will have to battle against other members of her own team to progress to the next stage.
“I’m working on combating my nerves. Hopefully, I can put on a good show in the battle rounds and get the opportunity to sing again,” she said.
