THE Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) says Zanu PF poses the greatest danger of spreading Covid 19 because of its mass gatherings at which regulations are totally disregarded.

The think tank urged the party and government to stick to laid down Covid-19 regulations by halting the gatherings.

In its November report on Access to Public Health, ZDI pointed out dangers that Zanu PF and government were posing on the country as fears of a deadly 4th Covid 19 wave mount.

Currently, the country is on a Level two lockdown which imposes restrictions such as closure of bars, limiting public gatherings to a hundred people enforcing the donning of facemasks as well as maintaining social distancing.

“One of the measures of Level Two lockdown measures include public gatherings of not more than 100 people,” the report reads.

“Of concern is non-adherence to this measure by the government itself thereby risking the striking of another Covid 19 wave, the 4th wave. During the period under review, the ruling Zanu PF party continued to mobilise its supporters beyond the required or stipulated number of people at public gatherings under Covid-19 level two lockdown measures and regulations,” it says.

“For example, the party’s District Coordinating Committee (DCC) meetings have seen participants going above 100 people with no face masks and no social distance among them thereby violating Covid-19 rules and regulations.”

The report further urged government to “Lead by example in religiously observing and following Covid-19 rules and regulations as stipulated under level 2 lockdown”.

Tens of thousands of Zanu PF supporters have of late been gracing numerous events mainly addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
